    About us

We are Marta and Sam, engaged with the magical place of LES OUCHES since few years. Guided by our love for Earth and Life and the countless way to celebrate and share it, we have been travelling, researching and creating all around the world for few years before settling down in this very isolated and wild place.

    My place

Our place is located in a small valley of the Cévennes, a mountainous area in the South of France. Very scarcely populated, the woods occupy a large area of the territory. This forest has been a place (and still is!) of researching and experimenting life in close connection and deep coexistence with the elements, plants, fungi, micro and macro fauna around us. AUTONOMY and INTERDEPENDENCE are at the heart of our actions and anything we do and any project we undertake are inspired by those principles. ABOUT THE SURROUNDINGS: This valley is very wild and isolated, it offers many beautiful walks in nature and discoveries (such as many prehistoric traces and traditional facilities). A wonderful stream flows over our land in which you can bath. The river is very beautiful too and very close You must like to be deeply immersed in Nature and enjoy isolation! The nearest village is really tiny (40 mins walk) and the nearest small town (Alés) is 45 mins by car. Nîmes is at 1h15 and Montpellier at around 2h. We are about 1h 45 from the Mediterranean Sea. Towards north, one and half to two hours driving, there are the amazing wild landscape of the Causses, Mont Lozère, Gorges du Tarn... No public transportation from Alés.

    Projects

Biodiversity oasis and Forest-Garden, Life and Nature Wisdom, Plants' Medicine, Harvesting and Cultivating the Rain, Dreamy Architecture, Inner Ecology, Autonomy and Interdependence. THE MAIN IDEAS OF OUR PROJECT: CARING FOR THE LAND AND BIODIVERSITY: We spent a long time in Greece, engaged as volunteers (2010) in a project led by a direct disciple of Masanobu FUKUOKA. That experience had an everlasting impact on our relationship with the earth and the plants realm. We feel very inspired by Fukuoka's practice, philosophy and spirituality, as much as by other currents of permacultural thoughts such as MSV(Living Soil) and regenerative agriculture. Every day, we try to be a little bit more self-sufficient (food and medicinal plant) through our permacultural garden and a young orchard, paying a special attention to the soil and its life. Over the past few years we have sown and planted a huge quantity of plants and trees in order to create a biodiversity island and a forest garden on our tough and poor lands. We run a reflection and practice around WATER manegement: we are implementing different ways to harvest, retain, manage water and slowing down erosion (recovery tank, infiltration basins, basins, key lines, plants adapted to prevent erosion, etc.). - MEDICINAL PLANTS and PLANT MEDECINE: We decided last year to start to run a small agricultural projects in medicinal plants, based on the work and research we've been carrying on so far and the desire to think differently about our health. We grow medicinal plants (local and coming from other medicinal traditions), harvest (wild and grown) and transform them. SELF-BUILDING: there was nearly no shelter when we arrived here. We now live in a small house rebuilt on an pre-existing ruin. We are improving and imagining new structures: sustainable and bioclimatic buildings, using natural materials, as local as possible, based on a creative, empowering and self-sufficient approach, paying attention to the energy footprint. On our land there are already : a small house (where we live) a earthen strawbale cabin, a large yurt to host workshops and courses, a yurt that serves as a shared bedroom, a teepee and a sibley tent (during the summer months) which serve as shared bedrooms a bathroom with wood-heated water, a greenhouse for seedlings, a greenhouse for spirulina, sanitary facilities (compost toilets and sinks) in the woods HOSTING FACILITIES: Les Ouches is also a place for people and small groups that want to spend some retreat time in the forest. In summer we can host up to 15 people. Within the last few years we have hosted workshops and courses for women, individual retreats for people wanting to take a break or do some individual work with Marta, families who come to experience a moment of immersion in Nature. Other projects are on the way, although we do not want to become a retreat centre. THE NEXT WORKS PLANNED There are often few projects in progress at the same time. We will meet everyday to planify and organize the work together according to the needs, priorities of the place, weather conditions and the abilities and skills of everyone. We will also share the daily tasks that our place requires for a collective and enjoyable life (wood cutting, cooking, washing, etc). Here are some of the upcoming projects planned for this year: RAINWATER RECOVERY CISTERN: This spring 2022 we will finish the construction of a 27m3 ferro-cement cistern (a very interesting and sustainable technique for building basins, cisterns and pools, avoiding the use of plastic tarps...see pic) for rainwater harvesting. We want to limit as much as possible the steal of water from the surrounding springs and streams. IMPLEMENTING THE KEYLINES and rainwater management system. TAKE CARE AND STABILIZE THE ALREADY EXISTING PLANTATIONS: As mentioned above, we have planted a lot of plants and trees (about 500 species). This requires for the moment a lot of maintenance and continuous care: ie, nourishing the plants and the soil of the gardens and, more in general, of the whole « oasis of biodiversity » area: watering, bringing organic matter, implementing some of the existing terrasses, sowing, pruning, grafting, keep nourshing soil life…. CONSTRUCTION OF FERRO-CEMENT basins and pools (to increase the hygrometry of the area and microclimat conditions). PINE CUTTING in order to widen the biodiversity oasis. GREENHOUSES: replace the plastic walls of the Seedling's and Spirulina's Greenhouses with a glass and wood earthen structure. SELF BUILDING OF A HOUSE: this is the big project coming its way for 2022. Our house is for the moment too basic to live comfortably all year round. We are conceiving our new space as an autonomous bioclimatic house with natural materials. Planned between 2022 and 2023. DRY-STONE WALLS: there are always some wall to create, rebuild or repair!
